Mastercraft, being exclusively sold by only one dealer, is a brand that doesn't get wide distribution, so I've never run across one in my journeys. My experience with Morgan Monroe (and I've never owned one, so it's limited) is that they're very attractively finished and decorated instruments, that don't sound exceptionally good. Make sure you get a decent shop set-up on whatever mandolin you buy. Look for a carved top (possibly back as well) again, the specs will generally emphasize "carved," and if they don't use that adjective, the top/back are usually heat-pressed into shape.Īre you looking at an A-model or an F-model? What's your price range? What specific models are you looking at? All these questions bear on the selection process. Ive found a couple of petty forum flame wars where people argued about their quality, as it may have come from China, and to some that means its automatically crap. There isnt even a wikipedia page for Morgan Monroe. Look for solid woods (the specs will say specifically "solid spruce top," "solid back & sides" adjectives like "select" usually mean that plywood's being used). Morgan Monroes own website doesnt have the banjo listed, and doesnt even have an 'about us' section. Without more detailed info on which models you're considering/comparing, hard to respond. Both Asian imports, with Mastercraft apparently being built for the Mandolin Hut/Banjo Hut dealer in TN, Morgan Monroe distributed a bit more widely.
